چکیده

Institute of Animal Genetics, Edinburgh Two symposia on theoretical biology were held in 1966 and 1967 at the instigation of the International Union of Biological Sciences. The meetings were organized by Professor Waddington, and in this article he outlines some of the points discussed at the meetings. The essays arising from the first symposium have recently been published under the title Towards a Theoretical Biology.

New Finds of a Small Anthropoid Primate from Nachola, Northern Kenya

Twenty two specimens of a small anthropoid primates, discovered at Nachola during the field seasons of 1982-86. are described in detail. One mandibular fragment is inculuded in the material, but other specimens are isolated teeth, including upper and lower molars and lower premolars. The material is considered to belong to Nyanzapithecus.

A new genus of tragulid ruminant from the early Miocene of Kenya

We re−describe the type material of the tiny African tragulid “Dorcatherium” moruorotensis from the early Miocene of Kenya, and erect the new genus Afrotragulus, the first African Miocene tragulid that does not belong to Dorcatherium. This new taxon is characterized by its elongated and stretched lower molars with a unique morphological dental pattern that strongly contrasts with that of Dorcat...

Allometric scaling in the dentition of primates and prediction of body weight from tooth size in fossils.

Tooth size varies exponentially with body weight in primates. Logarithmic transformation of tooth crown area and body weight yields a linear model of slope 0.67 as an isometric (geometric) baseline for study of dental allometry. This model is compared with that predicted by metabolic scaling (slope = 0.75). Tarsius and other insectivores have larger teeth for their body size than generalized pr...

A second hominoid species in the early Late Miocene fauna of Nakali (Kenya)

Nakali is an early Late Miocene fossil locality in north-central Kenya, where the Kenya– Japan Joint Expedition team has carried out fieldwork since 2002. Previously, a large hominoid Nakalipithecus nakayamai was reported from site NA39 of this locality. In addition to Nakalipithecus, the hominoid material collected from Nakali includes an isolated P3, which shows a considerably different morph...

Clay mineralogy indicates a mildly warm and humid living environment for the Miocene hominoid from the Zhaotong Basin, Yunnan, China

Global and regional environmental changes have influenced the evolutionary processes of hominoid primates, particularly during the Miocene. Recently, a new Lufengpithecus cf. lufengensis hominoid fossil with a late Miocene age of ~6.2 Ma was discovered in the Shuitangba (STB) section of the Zhaotong Basin in Yunnan on the southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau. To understand the relationship b...
